BPH - THE DISEASE

BPH is one of the most common diseases among aging men, ranking in the top 10 most commonly diagnosed conditions in men over age 50 years. (Fenter et al Am J Manag Care 2006)

More than half of men in their 60s and up to 90% of men in their 70s and 80s have symptoms of BPH. (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases 2006)

Symptoms related to bladder emptying:
  • Difficulty starting a urine stream (hesitancy and straining).
  • Decreased strength of the urine stream (weak flow).
  • Dribbling after urination.
  • Feeling that the bladder is not completely empty.
  • An urge to urinate again soon after urinating.
  • Pain during urination (dysuria).

Symptoms related to bladder storage:
  • Waking up at night to urinate (nocturia).
  • Frequent urination
  • A sudden, uncontrollable urge to urinate.
